What is web proxy and why do you need it?

Let’s say you want to keep up with your friends on Facebook. What do you normally do?

  1. Open a web browser (IE, Firefox, or Google Chrome).
  2. Type www.facebook.com in the address bar and press “Enter” key.

Everything is fine when you do the above at home. But how about at your school or workplace? You might see a big bold warning message like the following:

Web Site Blocked!  Access was restricted for the requested Web Site!

It’s pretty scary, right? What happened? The site you requested was blocked by your school or employer because they want you to spend time on study or work rather than visiting so called – “Inappropriate” web sites.

How can they block you? They may use various technologies, such as IP blocking, DNS filtering, and URL filtering, to exclude any web sites related to social networking, adult, game, and gambling etc. In some countries, the governments deploy many Internet Censorship systems to ban International web sites such as YouTube, CNN, and NBC.

How to bypass those network blocks and visit the web sites you want? Very simple, you just need to add one more step to your normal operation:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Type the address of a free web proxy site (e.g.  2unblocksites.com or twolulu.com) and press “Enter” key.
  3. Find the address bar in the web proxy page, type the site url you want (in this case, www.facebook.com), and click “Visit” button.

Amazing, ah? I don’t want to confuse you with all kinds of proxy theories and technologies. All you need to know is this:

“A web proxy is a middleman between you and the websites you visit.”

Your network administrator may block sites like Facebook, but those web proxy sites are usually not on the black list. So you can first visit a web proxy site like 2unblocksites.com or twolulu.com, then access the content on Facbook through it.

There is another benefit of a web proxy: You can hide your IP address. Why is it important? Because your IP address discloses so much important about YOU, such as your country, city, and network provider (Your company name may appears there too). If you visit a social networking site, your background information might be easily captured by others through your IP. Do you really feel comfortable about that? By using a web proxy, what others can see is the IP of the proxy site rather than yours. This anonymous web visit may protect you in some cases.

Now you have some basic understandings of the web proxy. In the next part of the tutorial, we will talk about the real meat – Why can you make some money from you web proxy.

See you then!
