The complete web proxy tutorial (Part 3) - How to create your own web proxy site

The good news is: It’s actually quite easy to create your own web proxy site.

You just need to follow two simple steps as described below:

Step 1 - Install you local PHP environment

Step 2 - Download and install free PHP proxy script

Step 1 - Install you local PHP environment

You don’t need to know how to write a proxy program. There are many free scripts available to download on Internet. However, since most of those scripts are written in PHP, you need to install a PHP environment on your local machine for testing purpose.

The following simple video tutorial will show you exactly how to install your local PHP environment using XAMPP.

Step 2 - Download and install free PHP proxy script

The proxy script is a program which does all the magic works. It allows people to access the blocked web contents through your site. There are many free proxy scripts you can download. The most popular are: Glype, Phproxy, and Zelune. Phproxy was used by many people before, but its development was discontinued in 2007, plus it had some compatible problems with the latest PHP version. I would recommend Glype because it is fast, reliable, easy to customize, easily extensible and feature-rich.

The following simple video tutorial will show you exactly how to create your web proxy using Glype.

How to install your local PHP environment using XAMPP

In old days,  to set up your local PHP environment, you need to one-by-one install Apache web server, MySQL database, and PHP. Plus  you have to manually adjust a lot of settings. It might take you, anywhere from 1 day to 1 week (or never), to finish the installation and configuration. Fortunately, there is a better to do it now, by using an automatic tool called XAMPP.

The following simple video tutorial will show you exactly how to install your local PHP environment using XAMPP.

The complete web proxy tutorial (Part 2) - Why can you make some money from your web proxy site

Why can you make some money from your web proxy site? Very simple, because hundreds and thousands of people need it. Those include college students, corporate employees, and people from foreign countries like Iran or India. They want to access blocked web sites like Facebook, Myspace, or YouTube everyday. They need a web proxy to do so. What does it mean to you?  It means Traffic to your web proxy site! In the Internet world, it may be the single important factor for you to make money.

Just to give you an idea, the following is a daily visit report of one of my web proxy sites. By the way, this report was generated by Google Analytics. You will learn more about How to optimize your web proxy site by using Google Analytics later.

2,588 visits from 40 countries in a single day! Considering millions of other websites couldn’t even secure 100 hits in a month, you should know what I mean now. But there is more to discover. Let’s examine the visits report further.

web_proxy_daily_visit_report_details

What can you discover from the above numbers? Among 2,588 visits, on average, each one viewed 22.26 pages and stayed on site for 12 minutes and 23 seconds. That converted 57,597 total page views in a day! What does “57,957 page views” mean to you? Money!

Let’s do a simple math:

The average Google Adsense CTR (Click Through Rate) is 1% - 2%. In other words, 100 page views will generate 1 or 2 ad clicks. How many ad clicks you can get from 57,957 page views?

57957 / 100 = 7957 Clicks

Assuming each click gives you just $0.10, how much can you make in a day?

7957 * 0.10 = $795.7 per day ($23,871 per month, $286,452 per year)

Of course, this sounds too good to be true. I don’t want to mislead you here. The reality is, page views from web proxy may not generate the same CTR as other types of websites. Plus you may not have big number of visits if you don’t know how to build, promote, and optimize your site well. So let’s divide the previous revenues by 100 times. Here is the money you expect to make from your web proxy site:

$8 - $10 per day ($240 - $300 per month, $2,880 - $3,600 per year)

It’s definitely not a big money. But it only costs you less than $10 a month for the hosting, and you only need to work 30 minutes per week after the initial setup. It’s certainly a good investment, right? The beauty is, this is a residual income, your web proxy will bring you money even you are doing nothing!

$300 per month might just be pocket money, but how about you create 10 or 20 web proxy sites?  How much money would you make then? Once you build your first web proxy site, it takes almost nothing to create another one. In my next step-by-step tutorial, I will show you exactly how to create your own web proxy site.

See you then!

The complete web proxy tutorial (Part 1) - What is web proxy and why do you need it

What can you learn here?

-  What is a web proxy and why do you need it?

-  Why can you make some money from your web proxy site?

-  How to create your own web proxy site ?

-  How to turn your web proxy site into a money-making machine?

-  How to attract traffic into your web proxy site?

-  How to optimize your web proxy site by using Google Analytics?

What is web proxy and why do you need it?

Let’s say you want to keep up with your friends on Facebook. What do you normally do?

  1. Open a web browser (IE, Firefox, or Google Chrome).
  2. Type www.facebook.com in the address bar and press “Enter” key.

Everything is fine when you do the above at home. But how about at your school or workplace? You might see a big bold warning message like the following:

Web Site Blocked!  Access was restricted for the requested Web Site!

It’s pretty scary, right? What happened? The site you requested was blocked by your school or employer because they want you to spend time on study or work rather than visiting so called – “Inappropriate” web sites.

How can they block you? They may use various technologies, such as IP blocking, DNS filtering, and URL filtering, to exclude any web sites related to social networking, adult, game, and gambling etc. In some countries, the governments deploy many Internet Censorship systems to ban International web sites such as YouTube, CNN, and NBC.

How to bypass those network blocks and visit the web sites you want? Very simple, you just need to add one more step to your normal operation:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Type the address of a free web proxy site (e.g.  2unblocksites.com or twolulu.com) and press “Enter” key.
  3. Find the address bar in the web proxy page, type the site url you want (in this case, www.facebook.com), and click “Visit” button.

Amazing, ah? I don’t want to confuse you with all kinds of proxy theories and technologies. All you need to know is this:

“A web proxy is a middleman between you and the websites you visit.”

Your network administrator may block sites like Facebook, but those web proxy sites are usually not on the black list. So you can first visit a web proxy site like 2unblocksites.com or twolulu.com, then access the content on Facbook through it.

There is another benefit of a web proxy: You can hide your IP address. Why is it important? Because your IP address discloses so much important about YOU, such as your country, city, and network provider (Your company name may appears there too). If you visit a social networking site, your background information might be easily captured by others through your IP. Do you really feel comfortable about that? By using a web proxy, what others can see is the IP of the proxy site rather than yours. This anonymous web visit may protect you in some cases.

Now you have some basic understandings of the web proxy. In the next part of the tutorial, we will talk about the real meat - Why can you make some money from you web proxy.

See you then!
